Open Modular Interactive Mapping Technology
for Visualization of Geophysical Data on the Internet

(continued)

4. Applications

In our implementation of the interactive cartography for geophysical data visualization via the Internet we use Linux-based Open-Source technologies. The choice was made for the following reasons:

  1. free and reliable software for databases, GIS and web-services;
  2. short Open-Source product refresh cycle and response time from the developers;
  3. platform independence and portability of the products.

On the server side we use the Apache web-server, the Tomcat application (JSP) server, Axis web-services (JAX-RPC) container, relational (SQL) database management system MySQL, and for GIS the (OpenGIS compliant) server MapServer. All these products are ported to most typical computing platforms, which allows to develop and install them on servers running Linux, Windows, Solaris, BSD, etc.
